Papers of the Harvie family of Albemarle County and Richmond, Va. Included in this collection are papers relating to the service of John Harvie (1742-1807) as Register of the Virginia Land Office and as Secretary of the Commonwealth. Materials include accounts, 1781-1792; a warrant, 1783, issued by Harvie for land in Virginia; and a commission, 1788, issued to Harvie appointing him Secretary of the Commonwealth. John Harvie's son Jacquelin B. Harvie married Mary Marshall (1795-1845), the daughter of Chief Justice John Marshall (1755-1835). Thus, the collection contains materials concerning Marshall, including correspondence, 1898-1917, of his granddaughters, Emily Harvie and Ann Fisher Harvie, and letters and notes, 1835-1884, on his career as Chief Justice. Other Harvie children represented here include Ellen Strother (Harvie) Ruffin's husband Frank Gildart Ruffin (1816-1892), consisting of letters concerning his application for a pardon from President Andrew Johnson; and Susan Colston (Harvie) Wade (1824-1880) and her husband Rev. Anderson Wade (d. 1879), consisting of letters of Susan to her sister Mary Marshall Harvie (1815-1873) and letters to and about Rev. Wade's service as an Episcopal minister in Charles City, Henry, and Prince Edward counties, Va.
